Salvador Bahia Airport, part of the VINCI Airports network, received the Green Airports Recognition 2026 for its data-driven decarbonization journey and for achieving Level 5 of Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA), the leading international certification focused on carbon emissions management and reduction in the aviation sector. The award was presented on Monday (28) during the ACI LAC/World 2026 Annual General Assembly, Conference and Exhibition. The recognition is granted by Airports Council International (ACI) to sustainability initiatives developed by the airport sector.

The recognized project encompasses the transformation of carbon management, which has evolved from an environmental reporting requirement into a strategic tool for airport decarbonization. The project was structured around a data-driven approach, integrating information on energy and fuel consumption, operational activities and other relevant sources of emissions into a structured carbon management system.

Through the collection, monitoring and analysis of reliable data, Salvador Bahia Airport identified its main sources of emissions, established priorities and directed the implementation of reduction measures. The decarbonization strategy combined energy efficiency, renewable energy, operational improvements and continuous emissions monitoring, supported by collaboration across all areas of the airport. In addition, the project involved external partners and independent verification, ensuring greater reliability and transparency of the results.

Rather than treating carbon reduction as an isolated environmental initiative, Salvador Bahia Airport incorporated carbon management into its broader operational decision-making process. To this end, the systematic use of environmental and operational data was fundamental to measuring progress, identifying opportunities and continuously adjusting actions.

The initiative also provides a replicable approach for other airports seeking to advance carbon measurement and achieve effective emissions reductions, contributing to the development of more resilient and sustainable airport infrastructure.

“Achieving ACA Level 5 represents more than a certification milestone. It demonstrates how data, innovation, collaboration and strategic management can be combined to accelerate airport decarbonization. This recognition also reinforces a vision that is part of the way we operate: sustainability needs to be integrated into the airport’s decisions and operations, guiding concrete actions to reduce environmental impacts and make our infrastructure increasingly efficient and resilient. We have a permanent commitment to protecting the environment and building a more sustainable operation, and this result shows that we are making consistent progress in this direction,” says Alessandra Reis, Environment Manager at Salvador Bahia Airport.

Amazon Airports also receive recognition

The Amazon Airports Concessionaire, which is also part of the VINCI Airports network, received the Green Airports Recognition 2026 for two projects aimed at improving environmental management through the use of technology. The initiatives include an artificial intelligence-powered application to guide teams in environmental emergency situations and an automated water and wastewater monitoring system. The solutions, which combine innovation and sustainability, are currently being implemented and will be used at the airports operated by the network in Manaus, Tabatinga and Tefé, in Amazonas; Boa Vista, in Roraima; Porto Velho, in Rondônia; and Rio Branco and Cruzeiro do Sul, in Acre.
