Essential preparation for a worry-free trip with children and teenagers

When it comes to traveling with children and teenagers, preparation is key to ensuring a smooth experience. It's important to check the necessary documents and specific rules for national and international flights in advance, in order to avoid mishaps and make the trip more enjoyable for everyone. In this regard, a few tips can be useful to help make the trip smoother and safer.

Domestic Flights

With the changes to the Statute of the Child and Adolescent (ECA) - Law No. 13,812 of March 18, 2019 - it has become mandatory that children or adolescents under the age of 16 cannot travel alone on national flights without the proper authorization from their parents or guardians. In these cases, specific documentation must be presented, which varies according to the situation.

In the company of a relative up to the third degree (father, mother, siblings over 18, uncles, grandparents and great-grandparents):

- Document proving parentage or the link between them;

- Child's document: birth certificate, original or certified copy; over 12s must present photo ID, such as ID or passport.

In the company of an adult person who is not related:

- Judicial or extrajudicial travel authorization. In the case of an out-of-court authorization, the document must be handwritten by the father, mother or guardian, with a notarized signature. The authorization can also be generated online through the e-Notariado platform, in the “EAV - Electronic Travel Authorization” section;

- Child's document: birth certificate, original or certified copy; over 12s must present photo ID, such as ID or passport.

International flights

For international travel by children and adolescents aged 0 to 17, there are other requirements in addition to the documents needed for domestic flights.

-Accompanied by parents or guardians:

- Valid Brazilian passport;

Accompanied by only one parent:

- Valid Brazilian passport and express authorization from the other parent by means of a notarized document.

- Please note: Travel authorization will be waived when the minor presents a valid passport with express authorization to travel unaccompanied abroad.

Unaccompanied or accompanied by a person over the age of 18 authorized by their parents or guardians:

- Valid Brazilian passport and express authorization from both parents or guardians by means of a notarized document. Travel authorization will be waived when the minor presents a valid passport with express authorization to travel unaccompanied abroad.

Please note: When traveling to Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela, instead of a passport, a Civil Identity Card (RG) issued by the Public Security Secretariats of the States or the Federal District is also accepted.
